Beginning at Hayward’s Theatre in Waihi as a child assistant to the projectionist, Rudall Hayward (1900 - 1974) spent a lifetime in film. Until his death on the road promoting his last film, To Love a Maori (1972), he was New Zealand’s most prolific pioneer filmmaker.
Assisted by his first wife, Hilda, he made seven feature films and numerous 2-reel comedies. His four silent features, My Lady of the Cave (1922), Rewi’s Last Stand (1925), The Te Kooti Trail (1927) and The Bush Cinderella (1928), are a testament to the achievement of New Zealand’s early directors.
With his second wife, Ramai, Hayward made many documentaries, educational and travel films. They produced films such as The Amazing Dolphin of Opononi (1956) which screened in 26 countries.
The selection of titles below are all the feature films directed by Rudall Hayward. They span a career of fifty years in film.
