Between August 1914 and
November 1918, over 100,000 New Zealanders went
overseas to war. The New Zealand Expeditionary
Force (NZEF) included infantry and mounted rifles
units as well as artillery, engineers, signals and
service corps. The first personnel, including six
nurses, departed from Wellington five days after
war was declared.
The Film Archive holds more than 30 films of New
Zealanders during World War One. Filming during
battle was extremely rare, so many films from this
time show life away from the battle: training,
leaving New Zealand, life in the barracks and
recuperating in hospital.
The selection of titles below is drawn from the
collection of war-related films dated from earlier
than 1919. All are of the New Zealand Expeditionary
Force.
