In December 1953, a ruling British monarch set foot on New Zealand shores for the first time.
The visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and HRH the Duke of Edinburgh from 23 December 1953 to 30 January 1954 was an enormous social event. As many as three quarters of all New Zealanders saw the Queen as she visited 46 towns or cities and attended 110 separate functions.
Dedicated enthusiasts lavished hundreds of feet of film on the tour; some sandwiched glimpses of the Queen between shots of family life and activities, while others produced small-scale, yet epic, documentaries. Professional cameraman, representing many studios, also covered the tour extensively. With the advantage of press accreditation their work has the benefit of better sight lines than their home-movie making peers.
The Film Archive houses many films of the Queen’s visit; like this selection, they come from all corners of New Zealand and reveal the fervour that gripped the nation during the Royal Summer.
