This documentary surveys censorship in all areas, beginning with the silent film era to the present day.
At [Hoani Waititi Marae] a carved figure showing the male genitals stands outside the marae in view of the public. Two women give their personal opinions about the carving, but to Maori on the Marae, it portrays the 'virility of their people.' Missionaries regarded Maori as uncivilised savages and thought their carvings were works of Satan.

Censorship may not have achieved what was intended and it was often the first response to changing moral and political ideas. Since the time of the early churches, everything from post cards to commercials has been banned. However, the major censorship battles coincided with the development in technology, with the arrival of film, radio, television, video and computers, all leading to increasing censorship.
